Kitchens have become a multi-purpose room and are now used for so much more than cooking - they are the soul of a house. Kitchen remodeling sits at the top of many homeowners wish lists, and for good reason. When done properly, a remodel makes the kitchen a more attractive space, improves its efficiency, and adds value to your property.
There is no one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to overhauling the kitchen but there are definitely some things to keep in mind when planning your remodel!
Know Your Budget
– When it comes to renovating a kitchen completely, it's good to have a budget set. You should estimate that a remodel will be roughly 10-15% of your home’s current value.
Keep Walkways Wide
– Paths throughout the kitchen should be 36” wide, but in the cooking area, they should be 42” to 48” wide depending on how many people will be cooking in your kitchen.
The Flow of Traffic
– If you have children, you will want to ensure that things like your range are not in an area where children are playing or running around.
Island Size & Use
– When you’re choosing an island, you will need to decide its function. The size of the island will change depending on how you plan to use it. If you want to cook and eat on it, you will want to make sure the cook-top area is well separated from the eating area.
The Range Area
– For your convenience, think about installing a shelf beside or on the wall in front of the range to organize your oils and spices. You can also use S-hooks to hang pots and pans which saves you cupboard space.
Accessible Water
– Instead of filling up pots over the sink and carrying them over to your cook-top, you can have a swing-out tap or pot-filler installed for easy access.
Knife Storage
– Have a designated drawer for your knives with slots that hold them in place and cover the sharp blades. This makes it easy to find the right knife for a job and also keeps them out of reach if you have children.
